St. Augustine closes the door Monday on an eminent domain suit

The notice for the Oct. 26 shade meeting is published. Nine days ago the same slot was a time and a room with no subject on it. The subject is Case No. CA26-1218, Florida Carry, Inc. v. City of St. Augustine, which the agenda item calls the pending eminent domain matter. The notice lists all five commissioners, the city manager, the city attorney and a certified court reporter, and estimates fifteen minutes. The statute that permits a closed session requires every one of those things. The case file itself is in a county system that answers a browser with a 403.

Beachside's Monday game is 200 miles south. Its calendar says Oct. 1

A week seven game against Legacy of Port St. Lucie kicks at 6 tonight, three days after Beachside played Fletcher and four days before it plays Westside at home. It is not a district game. The one place a parent would look for the date, the school's own athletic calendar on FHSAA Home Campus, carries the game on Oct. 1 and carries nothing at all on Oct. 26.

Two names are on the Beach ballot and we had not printed either

St. Augustine Beach Commission Seat 3 is the only city race on this county's Nov. 3 ballot, and the Supervisor of Elections' own candidate list gives the field as Jacob Dascomb and the sitting commissioner, Undine Celeste George. Both are listed N/P. Early voting has been running since Wednesday and closes Saturday. This paper named the School Board field on Oct. 21 and could not read this one off the sample ballot, because the columns in that PDF drift. The names were in a second document all along.

Fourteen school board meetings came back without their backup

The district's agenda portal lost fourteen meetings between June 23 and Sept. 22, then got them back in early October. What did not come back is the material under each item. The Oct. 13 packet, from a meeting that never went missing, runs 774 pages with the architect's own proposal bound into it. The Sept. 8 packet runs 166 pages, names each item's attachment and its file size, and contains none of them. Among the files named and not served are both 2026-2027 union contracts and the design fee for the new SilverLeaf high school.

PARC petitions circuit court over 4,462 acres and a missing order

The applicant says it filed a petition for writ of certiorari on Oct. 19 asking the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court to review the county's Sept. 15 refusal to certify approximately 4,462 acres north of Nocatee Parkway as an agricultural enclave. The motion that denied the application, carried 3 to 2, also directed the County Attorney to prepare the final written order with findings of fact and conclusions of law. Section 163.3162(4)(d) of the Florida Statutes runs the 30-day window for a petition from the date the local government renders its decision. No written order appears on the Oct. 6 or Oct. 20 board agendas, and the Clerk's index of board records links no minutes for either meeting.

Fire Station 21 opens Saturday, and the county published three costs

The joint St. Johns County Fire Rescue and Sheriff's Office facility at 4630 Melanie Street, Hastings, is open to the public for a ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. Saturday, according to a media advisory the county's Office of Public Affairs sent on Friday. The advisory gives the building as $4.5 million and 6,092 square feet with room for five full-time Fire Rescue personnel. The county's February 2025 release on the contract award gives 6,036 square feet and a construction cost of $4,001,674, and its March 2025 groundbreaking release gives $3.8 million and room for four. Both 2025 releases say construction was expected to be complete by the end of that year. The department's own 2020 master plan puts countywide response time at 10 minutes 54 seconds against a four-minute benchmark.

Nobody will say who put the misdemeanors in circuit court

The voter guide counts were filed on July 6 in a court that Florida law does not give misdemeanor jurisdiction over four of the five defendants. That was 27 to 41 days before the two year deadline to charge them ran out. When a judge dismissed them on Oct. 2 for being in the wrong court, the deadline had been gone for about seven weeks, and the state's own motion said in writing that refiling would raise limitations problems. The records this paper obtained from the prosecuting office this week contain the investigation and no charging document. The county's criminal docket is behind a login. The office has until 5 p.m. Monday to say who made the choice.

Monday's $100 Davis Shores parking fine is permanent, not seasonal

Ordinance 2026-23 is item 8.A.1 on Monday's St. Augustine City Commission agenda, second reading and public hearing. The draft minutes of the Sept. 28 meeting, published for the first time in the same packet, record Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline asking for the $35 to $100 increase in Davis Shores during Nights of Lights, with unanimous support. The ordinance in front of the commission carries no holiday dates, no seasonal window and no expiration, and the phrase Nights of Lights does not appear in it. The minutes of the Oct. 12 meeting, where it was first read, are not on Monday's agenda.

Sheriff says the plate reader vote encroaches on public safety

Sheriff Robert Hardwick issued a statement after Tuesday's 3 to 2 vote saying the board's decision encroaches on his ability to keep the community safe, and that his office will keep working to bring the technology back. The St. Johns Citizen reports the Sheriff's Office puts the number of readers that must come down at 89. Jacksonville Today put it at some 45 on county-maintained roads. The county has published no count, no minutes and, two days on, no recording of the meeting. Four written questions this paper sent the agency on Oct. 15 ran past their deadline on Monday.

Monday's predicted morning high at St. Augustine Beach is 6.344 feet above mean lower low water, which is higher than either of Saturday's, and Tuesday's is higher again. The city has put City Hall and 50 Bridge Street on a delayed opening until noon.

St. Augustine is 9-0, and Beachside plays a Monday makeup game

Five of the eight county schools won on Friday, and the two that lead a district are St. Augustine at 5-0 in 4A District 4 and Creekside at 5-0 in 6A District 1. St. Augustine has scored 369 and allowed 84. Beachside won by one at Fletcher, has lost every home game and won every road game but one, and is the only county school that has played eight games instead of nine. The ninth is tonight at 6 in Port St. Lucie, a week seven game being made up.

The National Weather Service has a coastal flood warning for Northeast and Southeast Coastal St. Johns running from 5 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Monday, and it uses the words significant coastal flooding expected. A wind advisory covers the inland parts of the county as well, from noon Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, for northeast gusts up to 40 mph. Both predicted high tides at St. Augustine Beach on Saturday sit above mean higher high water before any wind is counted, which is the part of this that is different from the advisory that ran on Tuesday. A gale warning covers the water from St. Augustine to Flagler Beach from 8 p.m. Saturday.

Doug Crane boat ramp closes Monday for about six weeks

St. Johns County's release says the ramp and its parking lot go off limits on Oct. 26 for maintenance dredging, and gives no reopening date. The county already gave one to its own board on Oct. 6: completion anticipated by Dec. 6. The same minutes put the start at Oct. 22, four days earlier than the release does. The board authorized up to $609,850 for the dredging in July, 5 to 0, on consent.

A county librarian is one of 14 chosen for an MIT program

MIT's Public Library Innovation Exchange named its 2026-2027 Library Ambassador cohort on Oct. 6, fourteen library professionals and three mentors, and one of the fourteen runs programs at the St. Johns County Public Library System's Main Branch. The county announced it two weeks later. The stated goal is twelve portable STEAM kits any branch can use, and the system has six branches and a bookmobile. Neither document puts a figure on any of it.

Ponte Vedra at Nease is Friday's only all-county game

All eight county schools play on the week ten card and none is on the bye list. Five of the seven games are at a county school and all five kick at 7 p.m. The two that leave the county both kick at 6:30. St. Augustine is 8-0 and has given up 77 points all season. St. Augustine is 9-0, and Beachside plays a Monday makeup game

Five of the eight county schools won on Friday, and the two that lead a district are St. Augustine at 5-0 in 4A District 4 and Creekside at 5-0 in 6A District 1. St. Augustine has scored 369 and allowed 84. Beachside won by one at Fletcher, has lost every home game and won every road game but one, and is the only county school that has played eight games instead of nine. The ninth is tonight at 6 in Port St. Lucie, a week seven game being made up.

School Board records

Fourteen school board meetings came back without their backup

The district's agenda portal lost fourteen meetings between June 23 and Sept. 22, then got them back in early October. What did not come back is the material under each item. The Oct. 13 packet, from a meeting that never went missing, runs 774 pages with the architect's own proposal bound into it. The Sept. 8 packet runs 166 pages, names each item's attachment and its file size, and contains none of them. Among the files named and not served are both 2026-2027 union contracts and the design fee for the new SilverLeaf high school.

Ponte Vedra at Nease is Friday's only all-county game

All eight county schools play on the week ten card and none is on the bye list. Five of the seven games are at a county school and all five kick at 7 p.m. The two that leave the county both kick at 6:30. St. Augustine is 8-0 and has given up 77 points all season. Records are as MaxPreps carries them on Oct. 23.

School Board

One of three school board seats is on your November ballot

The Secretary of State's notice of the Nov. 3 general election lists School Board Districts 1, 3 and 4 among the offices to be filled in this county. The Supervisor of Elections' own general election candidate list carries one of them. District 1 was settled at the Aug. 18 primary, when one candidate took 52.22 percent of 10,845 votes and so came off every later ballot under section 105.051 of the Florida Statutes. District 3 drew one qualified candidate and never appeared on a ballot at all. Whoever wins District 4 is seated at the board's reorganization meeting on Nov. 17.

Four touchdown passes again, and this time they lost by three

Houston 34, Jacksonville 31 at Wembley, and Houston gained fourteen more yards. Lawrence threw four touchdowns, which is what he threw in Week 1 when they won by twenty-four. The Jaguars are 4-2. A week earlier in the same city they outgained Philadelphia by 191 and won by two, which is the first time all year the yardage and the scoreboard agreed, and it lasted seven days.

Six of the eight St. Johns County public high school teams won Friday night. St. Augustine and Creekside are both 4-0 in district play and both sit first in their districts. Beachside is 3-4 overall and 0-4 in district, which is sixth in the same district Bartram Trail, Nease and Ponte Vedra play in.

Free trick-or-treating on St. George Street runs until 4 this afternoon. The Alligator Farm is open for Creatures of the Night tonight until 9. The Hastings trunk-or-treat that was on for tonight is cancelled. And if you are under 16, the Elkton corn maze will turn you away at the gate without an adult.

Under 17? The 8 o'clock show needs an adult who is 21.

Both cinema chains in this county publish their door rules and neither puts them on the poster. At Epic, anybody under 17 needs an adult of 21 or older for any film starting at 8 p.m. or later, whatever it is rated. Under 12 cannot see an R at all. Twelve to 16 needs a parent sitting there the whole way through. Photo ID is required for an R. And for Halloween week there is one more: masks, hoods and makeup that cover your face are not allowed in.
