The beach is out. Not closed, out. Breaking waves of 7 to 11 feet. The high surf advisory the weather service put out on Friday evening starts at 8 a.m. and does not come off until 8 p.m. Monday.
The rip current risk is high through Monday evening. The weather service says rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Then a coastal flood warning takes over at 5 p.m. and runs to 8 p.m. Monday, and the words the weather service puts in it are significant coastal flooding expected, with numerous roads may be closed underneath.
So make a plan that is not sand.
Start here. The St. Benedict the Moor Blues Fest, in Lincolnville. Four to ten, ten dollars, and the listing sells both admission and food tickets through the event site. Gitlo at 4. The Duffy Bishop Band at 6. Rosy Blue and the Dreamers from 8 to 10. Three bands in Lincolnville for the price of one drink anywhere else in this town, and the money goes to restoring the church rectory.
Bring a lawn chair. The listing says to. It also says no pets.
Here is the catch. It is a real one. The festival is outdoors, a wind advisory for gusts to 40 mph starts at noon, and the forecast carries a 90 percent chance of rain before 2 p.m. The listing prints no rain date and no wet-weather arrangement of any kind. Food and admission tickets are sold on the event site. If you only go to one thing today, go to this one. Go early, in case the 8 o’clock band does not happen.
Free, and free early
Cars and Coffee at the Classic Car Museum. Eight to ten, free, outdoors. The museum runs it on the fourth Saturday of every month and puts its own admission at half price alongside it. Go at 8. The wind advisory does not start until noon, and this is the only outdoor thing today that finishes before it.
The Amphitheatre farmers market runs 8:30 to 12:30.
The GTM beach cleanup is 9 to 11 a.m. That one is at the beach, on a day that has a high surf advisory on it from 8 a.m. and a coastal flood warning behind that. Their number is on the listing, 904-380-8600. Use it before driving out.
Four rooms, no cover printed
Meehan’s has Matt Still in the back yard at 1. Seamus Kelleher is in the pub at 7. The pub’s own posted October list runs two acts on most days of the month and prints no cover against a single one of them.
Tradewinds runs three acts. Elizabeth Roth 1 to 4:30. Mark Hart 5 to 8. Then Cotton Mouth at 9, which is the band the room gives its fourth weekend of the month. Tradewinds says to check its Facebook page for last-minute changes. On a 40 mph day that is not boilerplate.
La Cocina has Alex Peramas 1 to 4 and Jeremy Price 6 to 9. Prohibition Kitchen, which publishes its entertainment as a calendar feed rather than a page, has Za Za Flamenca at 6 and Marshall Horn at 10. None of those four publishes a cover. That is not the same as free.
The door decides.
Tickets, if you want a roof and a seat
Cafe Eleven has Jason Ricci and The Bad Kind at 8. Doors at 7. All ages, under 18 with a parent or guardian. A $5 under-21 fee is charged at the door on top of whatever the ticket costs, and the venue does not print what the ticket costs. It is a seated show. Tables are for reserved-seat buyers only. No price appears anywhere on the page.
Turnpike Troubadours are at the Amp at 6:30, with Muscadine Bloodline and Drayton Farley. The venue list gives that as the event start time rather than the doors time, and the doors time lives on the event’s own detail page. Ponte Vedra Concert Hall has JD Simo and Luther Dickinson at 7:30, with Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears.
The strange one
The Historic Timeline Saunter, 5:30 to 8:30. It runs on select Saturdays and the whole list for the year is Sept. 19, today, and Nov. 14. There is also a candlelight tour at 6:30 called Mortality and Mourning, and a crop maze at Sykes Family Farm open until 10 p.m. A costume run leaves the Old Jail at 8 a.m. It is $45 on race day.
And the one everybody ends up at anyway: Lincolnville, somewhere around eight, when Rosy Blue and the Dreamers start and the ten dollars has already been paid.
