Tradewinds has three different acts on tonight, and that is not three sets by one guy with an acoustic guitar.
Three names, three slots, on a Wednesday in October. Smokin’ Joe at 1. Mark Hart at 5. Jack Hammer at 9.
That is straight off the venue’s own weeknight grid, which runs 1 to 4:30, then 5 to 8, then a band at 9. Every night of the week has those same three slots filled with different names, which is a lot of hiring for the middle of the week.
The one you can walk to first
The Milltop starts earlier and finishes earlier. Jim Lamb from noon to 4, then Scott Halls from 4:30 to 8:30, and that is the whole of it.
Then nothing.
The same page adds a 9 p.m. slot on Friday and on Saturday, and tonight it does not. So if you want live music after half eight in the old town, you are walking over to Charlotte Street.
Nobody prints a price
Neither page has a cover on it anywhere. Not a number, not the word free, not a two drink minimum. The Tradewinds grid is three columns of names over two rows of clock times, and that is the entire document.
Bring eight dollars anyway, because a room that does not publish a door price has never once been obliged to honor the one you assumed.
The only ticketed thing tonight is a Dave Matthews tribute at Colonial Oak, 6 to 10. Its page says Ticketed in the title. Then it says “Click Here For Tickets!” where the number should be.
Two addresses, one page. The header says 27 St. George St, and the venue block at the foot of the same item says 21 St George Street.
Jack Hammer at 9
That 9 o’clock slot is the one that matters, because it is the only set in the old town still going when the Milltop turns the lights up.
Jack Hammer is not one of the house acts. Tradewinds is at 124 Charlotte Street and lists those on its front page: Live Stream, Hornit, Vegas Gray, Sizemore Band, Cotton Mouth, Blistur, Keith Godwin and Rio Grande.
So this is the weeknight rotation rather than the weekend one, where the bands on the same grid get 8:30 on a Friday and 9 on a Saturday and then play on until half one in the morning.
And the guy in the middle slot
Mark Hart has the 5 to 8 happy hour on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, which is five of the seven rows on that grid. Thursday is Acoustic Anomaly. Sunday is Shayla Nelson.
Five nights a week in the same room, in the slot nobody puts on a poster. The grid has been sitting there in plain text the whole time.
The page asks you to check its Facebook for last minute changes, which is the honest version of what every grid like this one actually is.
