Most of what is worth doing in St. Augustine tonight costs nothing, and the thing that decides whether you can do it is a bus that stops at 9. The STAR Circulator is the city’s free shuttle. It runs Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., so tonight that is a 9 o’clock last ride, and on Friday and Saturday it runs to 11. There is no fare on it at all. The city page that prints those hours does not print the stops, the route or a timetable, which is the one thing you would want from it before you plan around it.
The Sunshine Bus is the county’s system and it is the one that costs money. A one-way ride is $2.00, or $1.00 if you are a student, and students are named in the discount list along with seniors over 60, people with disabilities and Medicare and Medicaid card holders. The fare is paid on boarding. The driver cannot make change, so bring it exactly. A monthly pass is $30, or $15 discounted, and you buy it from a driver or in person at the COA Transit office at 2595 Old Moultrie Road, which is not something you can do tonight.
It runs Monday through Saturday. How late it runs is not published in text anywhere on its site. The schedules page gives the days and then hands you nine timetable images, so an evening trip has to be read off a picture.
The free shuttle prints its hours in words. That is the one to plan around after dark.
The free one, and the condition on it
River of Grass screens at 6 p.m. in the Gamache-Koger Theater at 50 Sevilla Street, on the Flagler campus, with a question and answer afterward with the director, Sasha Wortzel, moderated by Anne Schindler of WJCT.
It costs nothing. You cannot simply turn up. The museum’s listing carries an RSVP link, and seating is limited. Do that before you leave the house, because the thing that will keep you out of this one is not money.
The Nicole Antebi exhibition is in the museum itself rather than the theater, and the museum’s own address on that page is 48 Sevilla Street. It runs to Nov. 7 and is also free. The museum’s page still prints no opening hours of any kind, so a walk-in there is a gamble and the screening is not.
No cover published, which is not the same as free
Prohibition Kitchen has Colton McKenna from 6 to 9. The venue’s calendar lists no cover and no age limit on that entry, which is the whole of what it publishes.
The Milltop Tavern has John Tyler from 4:30 to 8:30, after Nathan Allen from noon to 4. Same again. The calendar prints no cover.
None of that is a published price of zero. It is three rooms that do not post a door charge, which usually means there is not one on a Tuesday, and which you cannot hold them to.
Tradewinds runs three slots every weeknight and tonight’s are Bret Blackshear from 1 to 4:30, Mark Hart from 5 to 8 and Ancient City Rock at 9. The page prints no cover for any of them. The 9 o’clock band starts at the hour the free shuttle stops.
None of those three calendars prints a cover, and none prints an age limit either. A reader under 21 should ring the room before counting on getting in.
The one that costs money is the one you cannot get back from
Quinn Sullivan plays Cafe Eleven at 501 A1A Beach Boulevard. Doors at 7, show at 8. It is all ages, under 18 must be with a parent or guardian, and there is a $5 fee at the door if you are under 21, charged on top of the ticket. The venue’s own page does not print a ticket price in either tier. The reserved tables and the general admission area are both described, neither carries a figure, and the purchase link goes off the site. The kitchen serves until the music starts, and the venue runs half price happy hour every day from 3 to 7, which is before doors.
That show is across the bridge, it starts at 8, and the free shuttle stops at 9. An 8 p.m. show does not end at 9, so budget a ride home or go with somebody who is driving.
Trivia is a county-wide thing that does not happen here
There are seven standing Tuesday quiz nights in St. Johns County and not one of them is in the city. Two start at 6:30, at The Plantation on Plantation Drive in Ponte Vedra Beach and at V Pizza and Flask and Cannon at 5700 U.S. 1 North. Five more start at 7: Fion MacCool’s on Hilden Road, Mr. Chubby’s on Valley Circle, Treylor Park on Marketside Avenue, V Pizza Julep on Canal Boulevard and Island Wing Company on Bartram Market Drive.
Every one of those is north of the city, most of them in Nocatee or Ponte Vedra. The free shuttle is the City of St. Augustine’s and the city does not publish where it stops, so there is no way from here to check it against any of those addresses.
Tuesday trivia requires a car, or somebody with one.
Tonight, in order
Reserve the screening now, online, before anything else. Be at 50 Sevilla Street by 6. The museum’s listing gives a start time and no end time, and the director takes questions afterward. Count on being in that room a while, and keep the 9 o’clock shuttle in mind on the way in.
If you skip the film, the music downtown starts at four in the afternoon and the last free ride home is still 9. The Antebi exhibition closes Nov. 7, and the museum has not published a single opening hour for it yet, so the next guaranteed way into that building is the next listed program.
