The county has a real escape room scene, and for a group of four to eight it is close to the perfect rainy-day move: an hour, a story, a pile of locks and puzzles, and one friend who insists they know how padlocks work and does not.

Escape U is out on State Road 16, a short drive from the historic district, and it leans into local stories. One of its rooms drops you into a 1920s St. Augustine speakeasy called the Sneaky Snake Lounge, which is exactly the right amount of ridiculous. Three rooms total, themed around the town, which beats the generic zombie-bunker setup you get everywhere else.

Beyond those two, the roundups list a handful more around the county, including Dark Endeavors, The Great Escape Room, and Locked In. Rooms rotate and difficulty varies, so the move is to check the venue’s own site for what is open, how hard it is, and what a slot costs before you round up the group.

How to not embarrass yourself

Book ahead. These are timed slots and the rainy-day crowd has the same idea you do.

Put the loud confident friend on the locks and the quiet observant one on the room. Search everything once, then stop tearing the room apart and start reading what you already found, because the answer is almost always something you walked past in the first four minutes.

And set the group text before you go: this is a plan for six people, and six people take ninety minutes to agree on anything. Pick a room, pick a time, and let the countdown clock do the deciding for you.
