The state’s 2024 annual traffic crash report carries St. Johns County on four separate pages. Those four blocks are below, reproduced as the state printed them. The page number runs against each block. Every column the state prints is here, including its own percent change and its own three-year average. Each cell can be found and read in the source.

Crashes, fatalities, injuries. Page 60 of 131

The first block is total crashes, total fatalities and total injuries. The page carries this note at the top: “A single crash event can have multiple injuries and/or fatalities associated with it.”

Category, as printed 2024 2023 2022 Change, 2023 to 2024 3-year average
Total Crashes 3,652 3,789 3,783 -3.62% 3,741

Drug & Alcohol Confirmed Fatalities 5 8 6 -37.50% 6
Drug & Alcohol Confirmed Injuries 3 3 5 0.00% 4

The three categories in the table above exclude one another. Alcohol Confirmed excludes drug confirmed individuals, and Drug Confirmed excludes alcohol confirmed individuals. The third category counts crashes where both were confirmed, and those definitions are quoted below.

Bicyclists, motorcycles, pedestrians. Page 100 of 131

The fourth block breaks out bicyclists, motorcycles and pedestrians. The page carries this note at the top: “Fatality and injury totals include both motorcycle drivers and passengers.”

Category, as printed 2024 2023 2022 Change, 2023 to 2024 3-year average
Bicyclist Crashes 79 88 92 -10.23% 86

Other Non-Motorist Fatalities 0 0 0 Undefined 0
Other Non-Motorist Injuries 4 10 5 -60.00% 6

“Undefined” is the state’s own entry in the percent change column. It stands where the 2023 figure is zero and a percent change cannot be computed.

What the category names mean

All of these are quoted from the definitions section of the same report, pages 3 through 7. A death more than thirty days after a crash is not in the rows above. The Alcohol Confirmed threshold below is greater than 0.00 and not 0.08.

Term, as the report prints it Page The report’s definition
Traffic Crash 7 “A crash involving at least one Motor Vehicle on a roadway that is open to the public.”
Traffic Fatality 7 “The death of a person as a direct result of a traffic crash within thirty days of the crash occurrence.”
Total injuries 5 “Sum of incapacitating, non-incapacitating, and possible injuries.” The report defines possible injury as “No visible signs of injury, but complaint of pain or momentary unconsciousness.”
Alcohol Confirmed 3 “A crash involving a Driver and/or Non-Motorist who had a Blood Alcohol Content greater than 0.00. This excludes Drug Confirmed individuals.”
Drug Confirmed 4 “A crash involving a Driver and/or Non-Motorist who tested positive for drugs at the time of the crash. This excludes Alcohol Confirmed individuals.”
Drug and Alcohol Confirmed 4 “A crash involving a Driver and/or Non-Motorist who had BOTH a BAC greater than 0.00, AND a positive drug test, at the time of the crash.”
Property Damage Only 6 “Loss of all or part of an individual’s vehicle and/or property damage only, resulting from a traffic crash not involving injury or fatality to a person.”
Motorcycle 5 a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle for the driver, no more than three wheels on the ground, body type code 11. “This term excludes tractors and Mopeds.”
Other Non-Motorist 6 a person in a crash who was not a pedestrian and not a bicyclist, recorded as an occupant of a motor vehicle not in transport, an occupant of a non-motor-vehicle transportation device other than a bicycle, or an unknown type of non-motorist.
Vulnerable Road Users 7 “Road users who have the potential for a disproportionately high fatality rate, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists.”

What the report counts

The report counts crashes, injuries and deaths. It carries no names, no individual crash locations, no case numbers, and no charge or disposition information. Law enforcement agencies publish their own crash counts on their own definitions. A count of crashes an agency worked is a different measure from a county total in the state’s crash file.

Why 2024

The department’s index of annual Traffic Crash Facts reports runs from 1994 to 2024 and stops there. As of Sept. 11, 2026, 2024 is the most recent complete year the state has published in this series.

The Tattler has no 2025 or 2026 county crash figure it can stand up, and does not print one here. The department’s separate Crash Facts page offers an aggregated crash dataset that it says is updated quarterly. That dataset covers the preceding three full years plus completed months of the current year, and the download offered is labeled Q1 2026. That page also says crash numbers may change between snapshots and that normalization typically occurs after 12 months. No figure in this story is taken from it.

A criminal charge is an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The Tattler tracks the cases it reports and publishes the outcome, including when charges are dropped or reduced. If you are named in this story and the case has resolved, write to corrections@stjohnstattler.org and we will update it.
