The county has a new page up for putting sand back on Ponte Vedra Beach, and the two dates on it do the measuring. The restoration it repairs was finished in the summer of 2024. The new sand is not expected until the summer or fall of 2028. Four years sit between them.

The page, added to the county’s coastal projects index since this paper last read it on Oct. 26, describes a FEMA Category G project. Sand would be dredged from an offshore borrow area and placed on the beach, restoring what the page calls “a portion of the original North Ponte Vedra Restoration project that completed in Summer 2024.”

The work would also widen the seaward face of the existing dune, plant sea oats and supporting vegetation, and leave what the county describes as a more uniform front to the dune system. The erosion it answers is attributed on the page to Hurricane Milton and recent nor’easters. The page puts no dates on those.

The money is settled before the design is. The page says the project is fully funded, and prints the split: 75 percent FEMA, 12.5 percent state, 12.5 percent local. It prints no dollar figure, no volume of sand and no project boundary, and the county does not publish any of those three yet.

The schedule it does publish is early, with the county still selecting an engineering firm for the permitting, engineering and design phase, and “construction is expected to occur summer/fall 2028.”

One beach south, the same program is further along, and it is waiting on paper. Twelve easements remain. The South Ponte Vedra Category G project’s design phase is wrapping up, its page says, with solicitation under way and construction expected to begin in the spring of 2027. That project’s page publishes its measurements: a dune crest at least 15 feet wide at an elevation of 14 to 16 feet NAVD88, the federal survey datum, and a 40-foot berm at 11 to 12 feet, running from 2539 to 3175 South Ponte Vedra Boulevard. The storms on that page are older. Its list is Ian, Nicole and Debby.

The county’s own pages give this coast’s recent calendar: the Ian and Nicole dune project finished its last approved reach in January 2024, and the North Ponte Vedra restoration finished that summer. If the schedule holds, the next sand arrives in the summer or fall of 2028.
