What is actually useful
- Documents. A memo, an email chain, a change order, a site plan, a contract, an inspection report. Documents are what let us publish.
- Dates and names of records. Even without the document, “there is a Nov. 12 memo from Growth Management about the CR-210 study” is enough for us to file a records request.
- What is on an agenda that nobody has noticed.
- What happened at a meeting we could not get to.
- Your kid’s school, your street, your restaurant, your team. The small stuff is often the real story.
What happens next
A person reads it. If we can verify it against a record, we work it. If we cannot, we will tell you so rather than publish something we cannot stand behind. We will not print an accusation against a named person on the strength of a tip alone — that is a firm rule, and it protects you as much as it protects us.
About your name
Tell us if you do not want to be named, and we will not name you. We would still rather have a document than a whisper: the safest tip for you is one where the public record does the talking and you are never in the story at all.
