No cover. Not at Mill Top, not at Prohibition Kitchen, not at La Cocina, not at Casa de Vino 57. None of the four publishes one anywhere on its own calendar.
That is the first thing to know about the weekend that is not the festival.
The second is ZaZa Flamenca, who is playing eight different rooms in nine days.
Eight rooms
Bin 39 Friday afternoon, then Lynda’s at the Ocean Club Friday evening. La Cocina at the Cellar Upstairs on Saturday, Casa Monica on Sunday morning. A1A Asian Kitchen on Wednesday, the Hilton bayfront on Thursday. Back to Lynda’s next Friday, and then the Witty Whisker and Casa Maya next Saturday.
Nine dates, eight rooms, nine days. She is not on the Sing Out Loud artist roster at all, so none of it is festival work.
La Cocina is the only venue calendar that publishes what an artist actually plays. Its own calendar lists her Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. with a genre, gypsy jazz and flamenco and Latin, and a one-line bio: “progressive music influenced by Gypsy Jazz, French music, Flamenco and Latin vibes.”
That is the working end of this scene, and it looks like a wine bar at one on Friday, a club at five, and a hotel at eleven on Sunday morning.
It does not look like a festival.
She is not alone in it. Smokin’ Joe Schauer has six dates in six days across four listed rooms, two of which are the pub room and the backyard at Meehan’s: the backyard Saturday afternoon, Ann O’Malley’s Saturday night until closing, the pub room Sunday evening, Ann O’Malley’s again Tuesday, Tradewinds Wednesday, the backyard again Thursday. Jesse Cruce and Eddie Pickett are splitting the two Mellow Mushrooms between them, trading St. Johns and Murabella on Friday and Saturday like a shift rotation, and neither of them is on the festival roster, and neither is Schauer.
That is work, not a night out.
The room with three sets a day
Mill Top Tavern runs noon, 4:30 and 9. Every day. This is the room’s own calendar, not the aggregator:
Friday. David Griffin at noon, Adam Grayford at 4:30, Alan Dalton and Terry Campbell at 9.
Saturday. Cody Greene at noon, Jon Q at 4:30, Alan Dalton and Terry Campbell again at 9.
Sunday. Gabby Samuels at noon, Scott Halls at 4:30, and no late set.
Jon Q has seven slots at that room in the nine days from Saturday, three of them billed as a duo, and none of the Mill Top acts above is a Sing Out Loud artist.
That is a residency here, on paper.
Friday night, ten o’clock
Trae Pierce and the T Stones, Prohibition Kitchen, 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Three hours, and the venue’s own calendar carries it. Not on the festival roster. Just the Friday late booking.
Before that, Danielle Eva at the same room at 6.
Saturday at Prohibition Kitchen is Lions of Jah at 6 and Pressure at 10. Sunday is the Reggae Collective at 6. Monday is Sam Pacetti at 6.
Pacetti is on the festival roster, so that one may be festival work or may be a Monday booking. The venue’s calendar does not say which.
Elsewhere Friday, off the county calendar: Dead Parrots Society at the BoatHouse from 5, Heather Craig at Meehan’s until 11, New Guys on the Dock at O.C. White’s from 6:30, Chillula at Mellow Mushroom Murabella from 7, and Glory Tributes at Arnold’s Lounge until 11.
None of those five is a festival artist.
Saturday and Sunday, away from the showcase rooms
Bad Endings play Beaches at Vilano from 5 to 9 Saturday. Matt Fowler is at the Shores Golf Club from 5. Neither is on the festival roster.
Sunday is the day this county is quietly good at, and Sunday afternoon is almost all of it. The Duffy Bishop Band plays Beluthahatchee Park at 2, Mojo Healers are at the Royal St. Augustine Club at 2, and the Dewey Via Band has Dog Rose from 3:30.
Then the line blurs. Trevor Compton has the Conch House deck Saturday 3 to 7 and Jimmy Hula’s Sunday afternoon, and the Lincolnville Museum runs three acts back to back Saturday evening: Resonance at 5, the Derryck Lawrence Project at 6:30, Billy Buchanan at 8.
Colonial Oak has Bob Patterson at 5 Sunday, the Palmetto Pickers at 6:30 and Gypsy Strings Revival at 8, and Arvid Smith is at Bin 39 at 7. Every one of those acts is on the Sing Out Loud artist roster, and Colonial Oak’s own calendar publishes the entire weekend as a single line reading “Sing Out Loud Local Showcase: September 11 to 13” without naming anybody.
So some of that is the festival and some of it is a regular booking by an artist who is also in the festival. No document tells you which.
The calendar is a tip sheet
The county-wide calendar these listings come from is submitted by venues and musicians. It is a tip sheet naming who says they are playing where, and it is the widest net anybody has: 222 individual listings across nine days.
Everything above attributed to a venue’s own calendar, which is Mill Top, Prohibition Kitchen, La Cocina, Casa de Vino and Colonial Oak, comes from that venue. Everything else is the calendar’s word. The rooms it names mostly publish nothing at all.
If a set time in here is wrong, the venue moved it and did not tell the calendar. Call the room.
Next Friday at Mill Top: Josh Tennessee Worthy at noon, Jon Q at 4:30, Jon Q Duo at 9.
