Three shows today cost nothing to walk into, and the cheapest way to reach any of them is a bus that also costs nothing.
Start with the bus, because it decides the rest. The Sunshine Bus does not run today. Its schedules page says the timetables “operate Monday through Saturday, except for certain holidays,” and every row of the schedule file the company publishes sets Sunday to zero. There is no county bus at any hour today, anywhere in the county.
The city’s STAR Circulator does run, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and it is free. It has eighteen stops and the city published them this week. The list begins at the Visitor Information Center and calls at Bayfront and at Cathedral Place and Cordova Street. It then crosses to the island for Anastasia Blvd. South, the Alligator Farm, St. Augustine Beach City Hall and a run of hotels down A1A Beach Boulevard to the Quality Inn, and comes back the same way.
What the city did not publish is a single departure time. The route diagram has no clock on it and no headway, so the wait at any one stop is not a number anybody can look up today.
The free ones
Colonial Oak Music Park, 21 St George Street, has Good Buddy Fest, which is three bands and no cover. Former Self play first, then Schrodinger’s Cat, then Spider Monkey. The venue’s own listing contradicts itself on when that starts: the calendar entry says 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the write-up says the music kicks off at 6 with Former Self, but a line further down the same listing says 7 to 10. Turn up at 6 and you have not missed anything. The listing says all ages and dogs welcome, with food from St. Augustine Seafood Company on site.
Meehan’s Irish Pub, 20 Avenida Menendez, has two acts and the pub’s own October list gives no cover for either. Baby Grey plays the backyard at 1 p.m. and Spade McQuade is in the pub at 6 p.m. The visitors bureau board carries the same two and spells the first one Baby Gray, so look for either.
Prohibition Kitchen has Micah & Skyler from 6 to 9 p.m. The venue’s own calendar gives no cover.
Colonial Oak and Prohibition Kitchen are both on St. George Street. Meehan’s is on the bayfront. The circulator’s first two stops are Bayfront and Cathedral Place, which is the same few blocks.
Everything else today is a drive
The visitors bureau’s board carries eighteen entries for today, seventeen of them music and one a farmers market, and most are nowhere near a stop. Outback Crab Shack has Jeremy Price from 11 and Banjo Brown from 5, and Sykes Family Farms has Hudson Vance from 1. Aunt Kate’s has David Watt Besley from noon and Pesca Vilano has Sam Pacetti from 4.
None of those is on the eighteen, and the county bus is not running, so each one costs whatever a car costs today. That is the arithmetic and it does not change until tomorrow morning, when the Sunshine Bus starts again.
Closer in, the board has Jim Lamb at Mill Top Tavern from noon and Jon Q. there from 4:30, with Space Heaters at Pierre’s Pub from 1 and Bad Dog Mama at Old Coast Ales from 2. It also lists Jonathan Lee Dotson at Casa de Vino 57 from 3:30 and Dewey Via Band at Dog Rose Brewing Co. at the same hour. Little Silver is at Tradewinds Lounge from 1, Jolie is at Bin 39 Wine Bar from 1, and Damon Slaughter is at O.C. White’s from 6:30. None of those listings carries a cover charge either way. Take cash.
The last circulator of the day leaves at some point before 9 p.m. The city has not said when.
