Flagler College charges nothing at the gate for every sport except basketball, and on Saturday it plays three home games. The bus that gets nearest two of them is $2.00, or $1.00 with a student ID.
The athletics department writes the free part down in one sentence on its ticket page: “All remaining regular season sports feature free admission to the general public.” The only tickets it sells at all are for basketball.
What is on at home
Women’s volleyball vs. Augusta, 1 p.m., Flagler Gymnasium and Clark Family Court. This is the best team in the building. The school publishes the volleyball record as 12-2 overall and 7-0 at home, and on Friday night in the same gym the Saints won 3-0 over Middle Georgia, taking the third set 25-7.
Women’s soccer vs. Columbus State, 12 p.m., Saints Field. The page marks the visitors RV, which means receiving votes in the national poll. Flagler is 2-4-2 and 1-0-1 at home, and its last match was a scoreless draw with a side ranked 15th.
Men’s soccer vs. Lander, 3 p.m., Saints Field. Flagler is 3-1-4 overall and 1-0-2 at home, coming off a 1-4 loss at Florida Southern, who were ranked 19th.
Getting to Saints Field without a car
Saints Field is not on campus. The school gives the address as the Flagler College Athletics Complex, 1655 Old Moultrie Road, says the entrance is next to the Humane Society, and then gives directions that begin at Exit 311 off I-95, which is a way of saying the page was written for somebody driving.
Two Sunshine Bus lines stop at Kings Estate Road and Old Moultrie Road, and they run the same loop half an hour apart. Conn-Ex #1 passes that stop northbound at 5:20, 7:55, 10:30, 12:50, 3:25 and 6:00, and southbound at 7:00, 9:35, 2:30 and 5:05. Conn-Ex #2 passes it northbound at 5:50, 8:25, 11:00, 1:20, 3:55 and 6:30, and southbound at 7:30, 10:05, 3:00 and 5:35. Two southbound cells are blacked out on each timetable.
For the 3 o’clock men’s match that is a 12:50 or a 1:20 out and a 5:05 or a 5:35 back. For the noon women’s match it is 11:00 or nothing until the game has started. The timetables print no a.m. or p.m., and they name stops rather than street addresses, so how far that corner is from the gate is not published anywhere. The customer service line that could tell you is open Monday to Friday.
A one-way trip is $2.00 at the regular rate and $1.00 for students, seniors 60 and over, people with disabilities and Medicare or Medicaid card holders. A daily pass is $4.00, which is what two one-way trips cost anyway, so it only saves money on a third ride. Fares are paid on boarding and the drivers cannot make change. There is no Sunshine Bus at all on a Sunday.
Bring nothing to eat or drink. Outside food, beverages and pets are all prohibited inside the athletics complex and inside the gym, and the concession stands are open, which is how a free afternoon starts costing money.
Free downtown, all day
The songwriters festival is on its last full day and every round is free.
Prohibition Kitchen runs 11:05 to 3, in three blocks. DJ’s Clam Shack runs noon to 3, also in three. Colonial Oak Music Park opens at 2 and goes to 10, which is six rounds in one room. Trade Winds picks it up at 9:15 with a second round at 10:30.
The free circulator downtown, which is the city’s and not the county’s, runs 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and covers a 1.12 mile loop from the Visitor Information Center to the bayfront to Cathedral Place and back. One complete circuit per boarding is the rule, and you get off at the end to get back on.
The Amphitheatre farmers market is 8:30 to 12:30 and admission is free. Shop it with SNAP or EBT and the market matches it with free Florida-grown produce. This is the fourth Saturday, so the donation-based yoga and the donation-based bike repair are not on.
Cars and Coffee at the Classic Car Museum is 8 to 10, free outside, and half price to go in. It is at 4730 US 1 South. Sunshine Bus lines do run US 1 South, and none of the nine timetables names a stop at that address.
The free thing that can hurt you
The rip current risk on every beach in this county is High today.
That is a defined category and the weather service prints its own definition under the forecast: at High risk, life-threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone.
The rest of the Saturday forecast reads surf 4 to 6 feet, weather sunny, water 77 to 82 and a Very High UV index. It is going to look like the best day of the month.
Next
The festival ends Sunday at Boat Drinks, 123 San Marco Avenue, with three rounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no bus on Sunday.
On Thursday the city’s free circulator starts running to St. Augustine Beach.
