Sarbez has three after-shows on its calendar this month, and every one of them is hung off a ticket somebody else sold.
Thursday, Sept. 17. Modest Mouse Afters, featuring PARADA. The listing says nine to eleven. Five dollars. Modest Mouse plays the Amphitheatre the same night with Robber Robber, and the Amp’s own list has that one starting at 7.
Friday, Sept. 25. Flipturn Afters, with Viloria and Naum. Nine to ten. Five dollars. The venue tags this one indie rock, which is the only genre tag on any of the three. Flipturn is at the Amp at 8 that night with Winyah.
Tuesday, Sept. 29. Of Monsters and Men Afters, with Matt Axton and Badmoon. Nine to ten thirty. The listing carries no cover. Of Monsters and Men is at the Amp at 8 with August Ponthier.
The calendar gives a start and an end for each one and does not say which of those is the door and which is the first note. That is the gap a stranger cannot get off a listing, and this venue does not publish it.
The room, and the clock it runs on
Eight parking spaces. That is the number the venue prints on its own FAQ, and it is the number worth knowing before you decide how you are getting there. The rest of the advice on that page is to carpool, get a ride, walk or bike, and to take anything in the neighborhood where there is no yellow curb and no tow away sign. The page also offers rollerblading and ice skating as options, which is the venue’s joke and not ours.
Then the part that is not on any flyer. The room changes twice in an evening, and the FAQ lays it out by the hour: family friendly until 8 p.m., 18 and over from 8 to 10, and 21 and over from 10 until close.
Work that against a nine o’clock start. You walk into an 18 and over room, and an hour later, by the venue’s own posted policy, it is a 21 and over one. Turn up at 10 at nineteen and the door is the wrong side of the rule.
No reservations, the page says, and the answer is one word. There is an ATM and a coin machine, cash and card both work, and there are no tokens.
The free one
No cover on Saturday, Sept. 26: Jejune and Pohgoh, listed at eight o’clock and labeled a Sing Out Loud event. Eight puts it inside the 18 and over window from the first minute, so this is not the all ages part of that festival.
Nothing is posted on the Sarbez calendar past Sept. 29.
