The county is moving the Hastings library from East Harris Street to North Main Street, and the first services go dark Monday.

Computer and printing services at the Hastings Branch go first: the county’s Oct. 30 release has both unavailable starting Monday, Nov. 2. The last day to pick up a hold at the Harris Center is Saturday, Nov. 7. The branch and the Health and Human Services satellite office at 400 E. Harris St. close Monday, Nov. 9. The ribbon gets cut that Friday.

The Hastings Community Center and Library at 401 N. Main St. runs 10,000 square feet, and the county says it carries a full-service library, a dedicated children’s area, a drive-up book drop, meeting spaces, a seed library and an HHS satellite office. The release calls the design inspired by the former Hastings Community Center. The dedication ceremony is Friday, Nov. 13, at 9 a.m., and the doors open to the public after it.

The terms of the move favor the reader holding a library book. Nothing checked out from the Hastings Branch comes due during the closure, late fees do not accrue, and hold pickup deadlines run seven days past the grand opening. Book drops at both locations are inaccessible during the move, and donations cannot be accepted. The books stay home until then.

“This new space is something that the residents have been waiting on for a long time,” Debra Rhodes Gibson, the county’s director of library services, says in the release. “A community is stronger when help is within reach,” Shawna Novak, the county’s director of health and human services, says in the same release.

The money paragraph names three sources and no amounts. The release says the building was made possible through the Board of County Commissioners by way of Housing and Urban Development grants, with additional support from the Department of State Division of Library and Information Services and the state of Florida. None carries a dollar figure.

Between the Monday it closes and the Friday it opens, Hastings has no library at all.

Nothing comes due, which is fine. Nothing can be returned either.
