St. Johns County votes Tuesday. Early voting ended Oct. 31. Polls open at 7 a.m. They close at 7 p.m. The county’s preparation report lists 42 precinct sites for one twelve-hour day. Election day voting is by precinct, where early voting ran at any of ten sites. A voter unsure of their precinct can ask the Supervisor’s office by telephone.
A mail ballot has one way home now. The office is at 4455 Avenue A, Suite 101. Its number is 904-823-2238. The ballot must reach that office by 7 on Tuesday evening to be counted. A ballot postmarked Tuesday and arriving Wednesday does not count under that rule. The Supervisor’s release says plainly that mail ballots will not be accepted at polling places.
Identification is required at the polls, and the rule is specific. A voter needs a current and valid photo ID with a signature. A voter information card is not a valid form of identification.
The countywide question is the land conservation bond. The ballot title reads:
ST. JOHNS COUNTY GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS FOR LAND CONSERVATION TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY
It asks whether the county may issue up to $100 million in general obligation bonds, maturing within 20 years. The county’s own page says the legislature placed a property tax amendment on this ballot as well. Nine contested local races follow, from the Supervisor’s qualified candidate list:
| Contest | Candidates |
|---|---|
| School Board, District 4 | Tammie McClafferty, Jillian Tozer |
| St. Augustine Commission, Seat 5 | Matt Brown, Julie Settle |
| St. Augustine Beach Commission, Seat 3 | Jacob Dascomb, Undine Celeste George |
| Anastasia Mosquito Control, Seat 2 | Catherine Brandhorst, Tim Burton, Sandra Fein, Ed Slavin |
| Anastasia Mosquito Control, Seat 4 | George Tom Anagnos, Gary Howell, Merrill Paul Roland, Jason Smith |
| Airport Authority, Group 2 | Jerry Dedge, John H. Wilson |
| Airport Authority, Group 3 | Christopher Cannan, Sean Griswold, Sean Hess |
| Port, Waterway and Beach, Group 1 | Lynda I. Kirker, Melanie Sunshine Neale |
| Port, Waterway and Beach, Group 5 | Clay M. Hansen, Tom Rivers |
Every candidate in those nine races qualified with no party affiliation. Some neighborhoods will also see community development district seats on their ballots.
The top of the ballot is federal and state. Three state house seats are up too. It carries United States Senator, two congressional seats, and Governor and Lieutenant Governor. It also carries Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Agriculture. One Supreme Court justice and three appeals judges appear as merit retention questions.
No county commission race appears anywhere on this ballot. Districts 2 and 4 were settled at the Aug. 18 primary. School Board Districts 1 and 3 do not appear, for the reasons this paper reported Oct. 21. The Tattler will report the results, with precinct participation beside each contest, when the Supervisor publishes them.
